Sight Specific

How I paint: A look through a viewfinder divides my vision of the subject into fractions, and I clearly see where strong contrasts meet. I mark those on the canvas with charcoal. I grind paint onto the palette with my knife, and, with broad brushstrokes, I weave large amounts over the canvas with a hunt for an overall spirit. Varied textures describe my search for spacial relationships. Distance or foreground is implied with thin washes or scraped off paint. Thick paint may identify form, middle ground or detail. As I filter through cognitive, physical and intuitive practices, my engagement with the work ceases being a record of my process. The painting materializes with a spirit of its own. ~ Tina Ingraham

Tina Ingraham was born in Kenton, Ohio in 1947. She received her MFA from Brooklyn College of CUNY in 1996 and Bachelor of Science in Design at the University of Cincinnati, College of DAAP in 1970. Influenced by three years of living in Perugia Italy, Ingraham’s study of Renaissance painting and fresco is evident in her warm palette, fascination with surface and vivid perception of nature. She is a recipient of many awards, including grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, Maine Commission for the Arts and Pollock Krasner Foundation. She has taught in a variety of teaching environments including Bowdoin College, Stephens College, Brooklyn College, and painting workshops in Italy, Colorado and Maine. Commissions of note include the Myron Edward Ullman III family portrait collection and the portrait of Joshua Chamberlain commissioned by Bowdoin College. Down East Book Publications include two reproductions of Ingraham’s Harbor Fish Market paintings: “Early Snow” in Carl Little’s and David Little’s Paintings of Portland, and “Portland Pier at Low Tide” in Paintings of Maine, A New Collection by Carl Little.
